Delta-8: A Quick Guide for Beginners
The Cannabis Sativa plant – in other words, marijuana – contains over 400 organic compounds. With most familiar with delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical identified as the psychoactive component in cannabis. But since cannabis has so many compounds similar to THC (i.e., cannabinoids), producers these days are making derivatives from legalized hemp like Delta-8.
It's certainly not the same as ordinary Delta-9 THC, yet Delta-8 is similar enough that we had to do a quick write-up for beginners. To give you an idea of what you're getting yourself into, here are the basics of what Delta-8 really is, what the side effects are, and how much you could need to feel the effects, which are far more subtle than Delta-9.
Where does Delta-8 come from? Is it the same as a typical cannabis bud?
To make a long story short, Delta-8 came onto the scene during the cannabidiol (CBD) craze that swept the globe a few years ago. Despite widespread cannabis prohibition, a compromise has been hemp-derived products that contain little to no Delta-9 THC at all legalized in the Hemp Farming Act of 2018.
The idea was that hemp doesn’t qualify as a schedule I controlled substance because this particular variety must maintain a maximum THC level that is well below psychoactive levels. Thus, smoking hemp doesn't give you the traditional buzz, no euphoria, no good times to roll.
On the flip side, hemp contains enough CBD to manufacture derivatives, provided you have a full laboratory to extract it without leaving behind any impurities. So what happens when you have a glut of CBD worldwide and a saturated market? You start to get creative with other legal derivatives, and that’s basically where Delta-8 came from.
How much Delta-8 do you have to ingest to feel the effects?
The answer isn’t straightforward because it depends on how you use it. If you try a Delta-8 vape pen, you may only need 1-2 pulls to feel your desired effects. Please understand that Delta-8 won't give you the same suggested euphoria as Delta-9 THC, no matter how much you take in during a session.
